Amenities with lots of wear and tear
Redeveloping work at Virgen del Manzano Square was completed some years ago, on a sunny and warm April morning. It was an urban project that from the very day it was made public sparked bitter protests on the part of residents. The actual construction work was not uneventful either. The ultimate goal was to construct an underground car park which to date is manifestly underused. Spaces reserved for local residents are splashed across classifieds pages [...]

Home Respite Care for the elderly
Burgos City Council has long been offering Home Respite Care with great acceptance on the part of potential users if we are to judge its merits by the increasing number of applicants. Home Respite Care for the elderly and people in need of care is a basic community care service, within the Home Care Programme, aimed at providing some respite, a break from their caring role to main carers of people with some degree of [...]

BICIBUR – The bright red bikes
We have all seen rows of bikes, neatly set up at different locations. They have no locks on them and, apparently, anyone could unfasten them and go for a ride. They are the tangible element of a very ambitious council-funded mobility programme called BICIBUR, a borrow-a-bike scheme. Everybody knows that in every city the car remains king and that is up to local authorities to encourage bike use by making cities more bike-friendly, and Burgos [...]

Is Villagonzalo Pedernales joining in Burgos economic prosperity?
Villagonzalo Pedernales is a small town to the south of Burgos City, only five km from its city centre. To reach Villagonzalo from Burgos we can either travel down Arcos Road and gain direct access as it runs right through the town, or, alternatively, get on to the Valladolid dual-carriage way (N 620) and take an exit. Its historic town centre is well-preserved and has retained the predominant architectural designs of old times thanks to [...]

Funeral Homes
Is a virtual monopoly stifling competition in the local undertaking industry? Funeral directors offer an increasingly wide range of services in an effort to meet the demand from quality-minded customers who want an individually oriented service. Relatives, quite understandably, are very eager to say farewell to the deceased in a dignified manner and are intent on leaving nothing to chance. They could set about it all by themselves and make sure that everything was carefully [...]

Let’s pull home-grown talent out of oblivion
His small and curious eyes scan you up and down. He is noticeably sharp-eyed, lean and with gentle welcoming manners. Despite a conspicuous sign at the entrance of his property perched on the hills overlooking Sasamon that reads “No trespassing”, you are always more than welcome to show up. As if on a permanent watch, he would step outside his bare concrete two-storey house the minute he hears visitors lured by hearsay or truly inspired [...]

Academically and green-minded
It was back in 2006 that Burgos University joined the scramble to go green and radiate an image of environmentally-mindedness. One of the initiatives within an ambitious and vigorous recycling program eventually carried out by the Buildings and Services Office was the positioning of a four-waste box facility, thirteen altogether, in all of its Faculties and Schools where students attend their lectures on a regular basis. Most emphasis was placed on the need to be [...]

‘For sale’ cars flood the streets
Cars have brought convenience for shoppers, speed for risk-lovers, an indispensable mode of transport for commuters. No doubt, then, why the number of four-wheeled vehicles keeps increasing, bringing its own strains to Burgos City. A higher number of cars adds to traffic congestion and, as parking facilities do not grow at the same pace, makes parking an impossible dream. In the so-called ‘blue zones’, or designated fee-paying kerbside parking spaces, cars come and go. They [...]

Powerlessness amid scramble to get noticed
In the early hours of December 26, 18-year-old Sergio Izquierdo was savagely assaulted outside a bar in Las Llanas. He sustained serious injuries particularly to the head and was rushed to hospital where he remains in intensive care. The two alleged assailants were taken into custody and then sent to prison. It is shockingly disgraceful that someone could lash out at another human being as those allegedly did. However, it is even more repulsively wrong [...]
